Friday Feedback for February 6, 2015

An anonymous listener wrote:

Your stations do such a good job. Recently on Sunday Baroque, you had a Galliard on with bongos, tambourine and acoustic guitar. Why not throw in a Hammond H3 and a Fender Stratocaster and a set of back up girls?.... I had to cut the radio off. Sorry.

Also last week, listener J. Tennille wrote on our website:

This is the best that [public radio] does. - AnonI am a long time fan of Front Street Blues and every show is great; but last Saturday was one of your best. Thanks for showcasing The Healing Blues group and their CD. I've gone to their website and bought it. This is the best that [public radio] does: music, education and financial support for people who need it. Thanks again!!

Listener Jim wrote:

Playing music or other background noise over someone speaking makes it difficult to understand the spoken words, especially for older people with some hearing loss.

In response: during most syndicated shows, producers provide music backgrounds for local station announcements to be read over them. While we do some automatic fading down of these music beds, as they are called, some producers make them louder than others, and we don't know that in advance. Those fed by our syndicated classical service have a consistent level, but for others, not so much. Engineers and program directors in the public radio system are even now working to establish consistent standards. Thank you for your comment.

Several more listeners have written in to our Classical Music survey, with views on HQR News, Classical HQR and more. Janet wrote:

I feel like the syndicated programs play the "top 40" and not much else.

Tom wrote:

I felt better off with just one station with some music and some talk but with good reception. I am disappointed in the poor reception of Classical HQR in Southport.

JoAnne wrote:

I like having HQR News all day very much. It would be fine by me to have some midday music as well, but glad to have the music in the evening.

A different JoAnn wrote:

I am a member of WHQR and I'm happy that finally I can listen to more classical music. I do like some of the [programs] on news station, but prefer the classical one over the news.

Greg wrote:

I vowed to listen for a while before making decisions, but overall prefer the old format. Since the range of classical is smaller I rarely switch over in my car. I like the larger amount and styles of jazz. I don't feel there has been a corresponding broadening of the styles of classical.

Doug wrote:

It might be logistically difficult to drop the interviews from classical, but I would prefer that.
