CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

Friday Feedback for March 2, 2012

Before we begin, I wanted to pass along a quotation I encountered this week in one of my favorite blogs. It’s from the great American poet Robert Frost:

Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence.

That said: we had several responses to items aired in last week’s Friday Feedback.

[AUDIO CLIP] I'm a constant listener to WHQR ... I was appalled by the gentleman who left the feedback in reference to homosexuality and the use on the Valentine's Day program. It amazes me that somebody would come in and be degrading toward someone's sexual preferences. They would not say that if it was a color preference and I'm ashamed that you even put it on the air.

Listener Michele wrote:

I was upset and disappointed to hear the thinly veiled hate speech regarding … gay partners, gay retirement homes, and homosexuals in general. In a world filled with war, violence, hate, and negativity, it is important to recognize and affirm expressions of love and caring, no matter what form they take. … [W]e supposedly do not discriminate against for color, body weight, money, or education; because the opposite descriptions: black, fat, poor, or redneck would be seen to be in bad taste. Then, why is it still acceptable to hate for who a person chooses to love? We will only truly be evolved and enlightened when, instead of cringing when someone says "I live with my partner in Wilmington", we are happy that one more person is loved. In the words of Atticus Finch: "If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view ... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it."

Listeners Susan and Bob wrote:

We are very excited for the advent of March 3rd, as we are hopeful that on that day the constant "Phil Furia and the Great American Songbook" announcements, interviews, and, let's face it, commercials will begin to taper off.
[AUDIO CLIP] Hi, I just want to voice my support for Diane Rehm. I think she's an amazing reporter [who] brings on such intelligent guests. And it's awful to hear people talk about her voice as being a problem. If they just take a minute to listen, she's just one of the most informed and intelligent people, and brings on this great range of guests. And I hope that you guys will continue to support Diane Rehm. And actually I would encourage you guys to move to the 10 o'clock and 11 o'clock hours for her so that we could actually have it live [so that] people could call in from Wilmington.

Bette and David Bauereis wrote:

Thank you for subscribing to the Diane Rehm Show. We have waited 10 years since moving to Wilmington to hear her show again. We listen now to Diane Rehm streaming from WHQR or XM/Sirius. People who focus on the qualiity of her voice instead of the insight of her interviews are missing a great deal. Diane Rehm has vocal chord disease which requires extensive treatment but that does not impair her intellect. Thank you again for bringing Wilmington a balanced and insightful show.

Having spent 4 weeks in Durham, NC, listening on and off to area's public radio station, [here] I am, again, most happily back tuning in to WHQR. What makes this station so very special and interesting is its diversification of programs. One need not like everything featured, but the station makes up for differences in preferences by the depth and variety of its programming. BUT, please, Cleve, slow down in your delivery of Friday comments. At that hour, some of us do not have our brains functioning at full audio-receptive speed. Reading speed is not as desirable as audience comprehension.

We’d love to hear from you on Friday Feedback, for your questions and comments, likes and dislikes about any aspect of the station. You can also send us feedback with an email message. Or call our Feedback Fone: 910-292-WHQR (9477). And thanks for your feedback.
