Last week WHQR's Development Director Mary Bradley met up with Angie Carl from the Nature Conservancy, Tony Doster from the American Society of Foresters and Resource Management Services and Victoria Lockhart from Resource Management Services to plant the forest that YOU helped create. During our 2014 Fall Pledge Drive, The American Society of Foresters generously donated one longleaf tree sapling for every pledge made. Coming to a total of 1000 new longleaf trees, together we will effectually restore 5 acres of longleaf pine forests.

Power reduction on 91.3, outage on 96.7

Jan 13, 2015

Tuesday 1/13, 11:15 am: A power outage at our 91.3 transmitter site in Brunswick county has caused 91.3 to operate at reduced power. As a result, HD2 Classical HQR and 96.7 are also off the air. We don't know at this time when power will be restored. Our live streams for HQR News and Classical HQR should continue to be operational.

This outage is not related to a different problem which took 96.7 off the air for several hours yesterday. We apologize for the inconvenience.

96.7 is back. Classical HQR returned to the air Monday evening, thanks to the hard work of Engineer Jobie Sprinkle and Operations Manager George Scheibner. Well done!

Earlier:  ATTENTION: Currently Classical HQR 96.7 is silent.  The tower has possibly been hit by lightning. We expect to be back on the air this evening. In the meantime, you can still access 96.7 fm by listening online or on 91.3/HD2. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

Power outages in Wilmington

Jan 8, 2015

7:45 Thursday: Downtown and other parts of Wilmington experienced a power outage this morning, affecting WHQR's Classical HQR channel at 96.7, 91.3HD2 and streaming. As of about 7:25, power is back up and Classical HQR is on the air again. Thank you for your patience.

What happened to Tuesday's Jazz?

Dec 24, 2014

An outage in one of our satellite receivers resulted in a loss of WHQR's 9 pm - midnight jazz on Tuesday December 23rd. The station was still on the air, but silent for several minutes while we attempted to bring the jazz back.

As of Wednesday morning the 24th, we still don't know the cause of the problem but suspect it was from the syndicated source we use. We decided to start the BBC early.

Naturally, this problem occurred during holiday times. Of course. Special thanks to George Scheibner for returning to the station, investigating the problem and putting the BBC on.

Holiday Blues on WHQR!

Dec 19, 2014

When it comes to Christmas music the Blues has its fair share, and then some. From the familiar strains of "Merry Christmas Baby" by Charles Brown to Lynn August's "Christmas by the Bar-B-Que," there are hundreds of holiday Blues and R&B cds, containing thousands of familiar and original tunes. Front Street Blues presents its take on a blue Christmas, and it's sure to please.

Wikimedia Commons

This post has been updated -- 12/18/14.

Congress has extended a tax break on charitable donations from individual donor's retirement accounts retroactively to January 1, 2014. The President is expected to sign this legislation.

This provision, which expired in 2013, allows individuals 70 ½ and older to donate up to $100,000 in IRA assets to a qualified charitable organization. The IRA charitable rollover is tax-free and not included in a donor's adjusted gross income.

Remembering Car Talk's beloved Tom Magliozzi

Nov 3, 2014
Richard Howard

Tom Magliozzi, one of the hosts of Car Talk, passed away today, Monday, November 3, due to complications of Alzheimer's Disease.

Car Talk producer Doug Berman wrote this, in part, to stations this afternoon:

Tom’s been such a dominant, positive personality amongst us for so long that all of us in the public radio family—and I include our millions of listeners—will find this news very difficult to receive...
