New Hanover County Board of Elections Responds to Claims of Student Disenfranchisement

Election Day is November 4th.

Responding to complaints made by the New Hanover County Democratic Party, the New Hanover County Board of Elections denies any alleged disenfranchisement of student voters.  There have been no reports of voters being turned away for any reason, including inability to state their street addresses.

In order to register to vote, all voters—including dormitory students—must provide their street address.  Voter registration information is available online, and voters can reference the address on file before heading to the polls or even at the polling station on a smart phone.  Marvin McFadyen, the Director of the New Hanover County Board of Elections, says it is the responsibility of the voter to know the information that the Board of Elections has on file:

"When the person approaches the registration table, there are two very important pieces of information that person must provide.  Number one is their name, and number two is their current residence address.  And that’s written specifically in the law, that that is part of that process.  That current name and address is what was required when registering initially.  And to prove the residence address upon entering the polling place, it simply is to state that information."

McFadyen encourages voters to contact the Board of Elections—whether by phone or via the website—and make sure their residence information is current before they head to the polls.
