CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

NC Unemployment Hovers Above 9 percent

North Carolina’s unemployment rate decreased from 9.7 percent in October to 9.5 percent in November.

While unemploymentdipped in most counties within our listening area, little has changed since November of 2010.

According to the state Employment Security Commission, New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus, and Pender counties all saw slight decreases within a few tenths of a percent.

And even though there was a drop in New Hanover down to 9.2 percent, that’s the same rate as November of 2010.

In Columbus, the unemployment rate was 12 percent for November and Pender’s rate was 11.5 percent.

Since December of 2010 the state has paid almost $4 billion in unemployment benefits, and nearly $80 million went to New Hanover County.
