Mayor Saffo Hopes New Community Relations Advisory Committee Will Keep Dialogue Flowing

City of Wilmington
Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo

Back in January, the Wilmington Police Department and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the University of North Carolina - Wilmington to conduct a series of community discussions.  Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo hopes a new Community Relations Advisory Committee will continue that conversation between law enforcement officers and local citizens.

So far, ten Community Dialogue Discussions have taken place, and there are ten more to go.  But Mayor Saffo says the dialogue can’t stop once the contract is finished with UNCW:

"What I see as the mayor is nobody’s talking to each other. They talk over each other, using different forms and different formats, whether it be the internet or Twitter or coming in here and having a demonstration, but the actual groups sitting down and having an actual conversation is what I, from a public policy perspective that has to implement these policies, want to see because from that, I’ve always found that when people talk to each other, good public policy comes out, and that’s what we’re going to try to do with this commission."

The Community Relations Advisory Committee will be comprised of members from the civil rights, faith, business, and education communities, and there will be representatives from the Wilmington Police Department and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department as well.
