About Insider/Outsider: Art Two Ways:

Candy and Kirah are friends and fellow artists inspired by similar subjects and themes, yet with distinct voices and painting styles. "Insider/Outsider: Art Two Ways" is a fun and unique juxtaposition of Candy's folk art style with Kirah's more contemporary, academic approach. There is a creative contrast between the whimsical, retro, graphic storytelling with the multi-layer, mixed media process. Their subjects are everyday objects as still lifes and landscapes of familiar scenes.  Each pairing represents their interpretation of the same subject and inspiration, may it be a photo, quote, story passage, a variety of creative triggers.  With 30+ paintings and a unique combination of voices, "Insider/Outsider: Art Two Ways" presents a creative twist on the more traditional art exhibition.

About the Artists:

Candy PegramA native North Carolinian of many generations, Candy’s roots and inspiration run deep in the South.  Discarded wood and unwanted paint are the main ingredients in her colorful scenes of people, objects, and critters in her unmistakable style of southern folk art. Currently, Candy’s working studio is a part of the Independent Art Company at Wabi Sabi Warehouse in Wilmington, NC.

Kirah Van SickleKirah Van Sickle is an award-winning artist and adventurer at heart. Her early years set a foundation for travel, exploration and visual storytelling. Kirah's diverse career includes commercial design and illustration, art direction, fine art and art education. Kirah's paintings and mixed media works are deeply personal expressions of her memories and dreams, a combination of both traditional and contemporary processes. She lives on the Cape Fear Coast of North Carolina, is a staff instructor at the Cameron Art Museum and Cape Fear Community College.
