HQR News Department Wins Associated Press and RTDNAC Awards

The WHQR News Department won six outstanding journalism awards last weekend at the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas/Associated Press Convention and Awards Luncheon at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

HQR News was named by the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas for Best Entertainment Story for a feature on John Lithgow reported by News Director Rachel Lewis Hilburn. The news team was also honored in three other categories: Education, General News, and Political Coverage.

HQR News was also honored with second place awards by the Associated Press in two categories: Outstanding News Operation and Public Service.

WHQR Station Manager Cleve Callison said “I salute our excellent news department. Both News Director Rachel Lewis Hilburn and reporter Isabelle Shepherd work tirelessly to cover local news and cultural events. Together with our weekly CoastLine talk show, their news reports make Morning Edition and All Things Considered outstanding examples of local, public service radio.”

WHQR Public Radio, broadcasting from Wilmington, serves southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina with HQR News at 91.3fm and Classical HQR at 96.7fm. WHQR offers news, music, entertainment and interaction to expand knowledge, encourage artistic appreciation, engage our community and promote civil discourse.
