CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

Friday Feedback for January 23, 2015

"A frightened and an angry face, left and right respectively. Wellcome V0009326" by Wellcome Library, London - http://wellcomeimages.org/indexplus/obf_images/69/b2/74e57a8d3ead56f77459552ab7b0.jpgGallery: http://wellcomeimages.org/indexplus/image/V0009326

We’ve had plenty of good comments on Friday Feedback recently. Better fasten your seat belts for today’s installment.

Last August we conducted a survey of classical music listeners as we prepared to launch Classical HQR on 96.7. Now that it’s been on the, we’ve re-contacted with those who filled out the earlier survey and who gave us their mailing addresses. A few responses have come in, too few so far to draw any general conclusions, but some of the comments are … interesting.

Of course one item of real concern for people living outside the coverage area of 96.7 has been signal reception. As I’ve mentioned on Friday Feedback, we recommend that such folks listen on an HD Radio, either through buying one or through our Pay It Forward program. So I won’t dwell on that today, but here are some responses. Suzanne wrote:

I hardly ever listen because I am unable to receive the classical station at my home and cannot stream it on my smart phone at home because I have no signal at home, and cannot stream on my computer because my ISP is a satellite service with a limited amount of data … I can only listen when I am driving in my car, which is not often… I hate the BBC and cannot figure out why on earth you chose them as your late night news service… I cannot stand your local broadcasts. A bunch of self-inflated egos swooning over the sounds of their own voices. That excludes Phil Furia, who is actually a class act and should be syndicated nationally if that is not already the case.

I'm more a fan of HQR News, but I must say that one of my favorite changes is the new Standard Time program.

Listener Jim wrote:

The new Classical WHQR has too much of the same time period of music, Baroque, [and] not enough symphonic works… The audio from WHQR [News] and Classical WHQR is so different! Why would you use the digital transmitter for news, and the "boom box" sounding x-mitter for music?! This I do not understand!

To clarify, and I know this is confusing, there is a difference in power between 91.3 and 96.7, and their transmitters are made by different firms, so yes, there might be differences in the listening experience of each. But there is no difference between the TYPE of transmission in each. If you’re listening on a standard FM radio, neither signal is more digital than the other. If you’re listening on an HD radio, on the other hand, you could listen to any one of four signals: standard FM 91.3, standard FM 96.7, or their HD counterparts, which are 91.3/HD1 for news and 91.3/HD2 for classical.

Gosh, I hope that’s clear.

96.7 seems to go the way of MUZAC in Elevators.

One question on the survey is whether listeners wanted hourly newscasts. Anonymous wrote:

They are already on the news station! When I switch, there they are!

Michele wrote:

It sounds silly, but since I never changed the channel in my car before, I either enjoyed what was on, or I turned off the radio. I don't change the channel in the car, so I don't hear classical radio at all anymore... I wish there weren't 2 stations. I liked it better when classical music was on the regular station.

Listener Amanda wrote:

I think we have the best of both... If I get tired of listening to talk, I just switch stations at home. Classical is not available on my car radio.

Meredith wrote:

The radio is on most of the day. I listen to both stations.

We’d love to hear from you on Friday Feedback. You can always leave a message via email to feedback@WHQR.org. Our Feedback Phone is 910-292-9477. And thanks for your feedback.
