In Brunswick County, the Board of Commissioners remains solidly Republican. Incumbent Marty Cooke, who’s served on the Board since 2008, easily beat unaffiliated candidate Marilyn Priddy.
Priddy’s galvanizing issue, opposition to offshore drilling, launched the registered Democrat into the race in March – when she gathered signatures on a petition to secure a spot on the ballot. In the end, Cooke won by twenty-nine percentage points.
Incumbent Randy Thompson, also a Republican, ran unopposed.
Brunswick County’s Board of Education saw Republican challenger Jerry Benton unseat incumbent John Thompson for the party nomination in District 5. Benton went on to beat Democrat Joanne Levitan by more than 20 points.
District 3 also had a school board contest – which saw incumbent Republican Charlie Miller keep his seat against a challenge by Democrat Bill Flythe – with a Miller lead of 22 points.
Sheriff John Ingram, a Republican, trounced Democratic challenger Charles Warren – finishing with nearly three-quarters of the vote.
