Catherine Welch
News Director
Catherine
comes to WHQR from Columbia, Missouri where she was news director at
NPR station KBIA and faculty member at the University of Missouri
School of Journalism.
Catherine received the Edward R. Murrow
regional awards for her reports on the Cape Fear region's connection to
the gulf coast region hit by hurricanes, train stations across
Missouri, and a rural town destroyed by tornados. She has also received
awards from the North Carolina Associated Press, Missouri Broadcasters
Association and Missouri Public Health Association.
Catherine
loves politics and was thrilled to be working in a swing state during
the 2004 election. She covered visits to Missouri by President Bush and
Vice President Dick Cheney. And she was the only local NPR reporter to
ride the train across Missouri with the Kerry-Edwards campaign. She
also chaired a committee that hosted a debate in 2004 for Missouri
Senator Kit Bond's seat. Catherine is excited about the 2008 campaign
and will work hard to keep listeners from being overloaded with
political coverage.
Before joining the public radio family,
Catherine worked in television at KTVU in Oakland and at the cable
technology network formerly known as TechTV.
Today, Catherine chases down news stories for the daily newscasts and in-depth features, produces Mid-Day Edition, hosts All Things Considered, and files for NPR.
She
loves the area and hopes you will share your views on WHQR news along
with any concerns you may have about issues impacting your community.
Please feel free to email Catherine cwelch@whqr.org.
