  WHQR Presents:

Homemade Holiday

Shorts

December 14th from 6-7pm

Doors open at 5:20, a reception will follow

Homemade Holiday Shorts returns this year with a homespun southern theme and an exciting slate of guests and stories.  For one evening each December, friends of WHQR gather in our gallery and around their radios at home, to listen to holiday stories read live by a panel of entertaining guests.  We also treat you to some terrific holiday music and, of course, good food, good wine and holiday cheer.   For many, this special event has become the opening celebration of their holiday season.  This year, we are thrilled to have some very funny southern writers reading their own stories.

This year's talent includes:

Nan Graham
A frequent commentator on WHQR, listeners have heard Graham regale them with stories of the South and Southerners, subjects she knows as well as anyone. Best-selling author Pat Conroy, no slouch himself at navigating the cultural byways of Dixie, said Graham "is so relentlessly Southern she makes me feel that I was born in Minnesota." Nan Graham's second collection of humorous essays, In a Magnolia Minute, is in bookstores now.  Ms. Graham will be reading her own story titled "Yule for Y'all."

Clyde Edgerton
Mr. Edgerton is the author of seven bestsellers, including, Raney, Walking Across Egypt, and Where Trouble Sleeps. Five of his novels have been New York Times Notable Books. Two of his novels, Walking Across Egypt and Killer Diller have been made into films.  His latest book is The Bible Salesman.  A musician and songwriter, he is currently a professor in the Creative Writing Department at UNCW.  Mr. Edgerton will read his own story titled “Good Will Toward Men.”

Annie Gray Johnston
Completing our slate of guests is Annie Gray Johnston who explains that she has no particular credentials except that she loves a publicity opportunity and a microphone.  She is a general enthusiast and a chronic volunteer.  Ms. Johnston currently serves as a trustee on the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation and at Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts.  Ms. Johnston is related to a cast of characters including Ogden Nash, John T. Hoggard and Alexander Sprunt and says that she is a shameless campaigner to become the favorite child of her parents, Beth and Laurence Sprunt.

 Rob Zapple, Emcee

Rob Zapple, has been a professional actor for more than 30 years. He has appeared on stage, TV, and film, including roles on “One Tree Hill,” “Dawson’s Creek” and “Murder She Wrote.”  Mr. Zapple is also a member of WHQR’s Board of Directors and is the President of the Board of Trustees of Thalian Hall’s Center for the Performing Arts.

Please arrive by 5:30 to attend the performance, which begins promptly at 6 p.m.  The reception follows the program at 7 p.m.
